To the eighteenth century Newton represented the triumph of rational thought, the bringing of order to the Universe. But the mystic-artist William Blake could not forgive Newton the omission of a spiritual dimension from his theories. In a poem contained in a letter addressed to his patron Thomas Butts, Blake famously concluded:
May God us keep
From single vision and Newton's sleep

With the advent of Quantum Mechanics in the 20th century, Issac Newton’s theories were superceded and once more we are talking about a synthesis of science and spirituality.
